Quality of line

I took a few images from the internet that reflected on my subject of Punk,Ska and Northern soul. Using my images as references to study in this task. I worked a few different materials charcoal, drawing ink ans a brush pen. I feel that the more successful images came from using a brush and the drawing ink as it has a more fluid flow to the lines.

Here I have used charcoal, but i don't like how this looks or the feels it has, i feel i may have been using too much pressure whilst applying it.

this is the brush pen which is ok just understanding how the flow of ink is distributed makes it hard to know how muck ink is going to be applied resulting in irregular lines.
these are done which a bush and drawing ink, i was most comfortable using this method as you have more contril over the application of ink and can get much clearer uniformed lines resulting in a better image (with some practise im sure this will be true)

Photoshop final week.

Here i have scanned in my Pencil roll as it is made out of canvas i was hoping the texture would give a good effect to the image. You can see on the blue i used to create the sky has got great tonal values that using the canvas fill has given.

Here i have used the texture of my hat to give some texture to the image but i don't feel it works as well as the other one.
Here i have just used a black fill for the background and used a photo i have taken of some autumn leafs. I really like how this one looks its different from the other i have done and its just looks nice and simple.

With this one I have just re added the canvas filled background with a black overfill, I have turned the opacity levels on the black down to 80% to give it a dark feel but still with the texture of the canvas coming thought. Also i have played around with the Hue and Saturation levels to see what a different feel it would add.

with this one i have just added and removed some of the different layers and moved them to different posions within the layer. The hat texture has just been put over the leaf layer so it gives a double bonus effect that i feel looks and feels like autumn.
this has just had the filler changed from overlay to multiply and it gives the whole image a different feel.

Studio Brief 2 - Day in the Life

We where asked to produce 15 drawings that responded to a article given to us. Mine was from a blog post about been able to talk to your future self using new software developed by communication company Orange. At first i struggled to come up with ideas that related to the article as i was trying to over complicate the matter with the whole article. But once i had realised that all i need to do was get the readers interested in the article with a little snippet of the information in illustrative form.
Here are a few of the ideas i had, and these are the designs im going to be working on over the next week to come up with my final submissions.

this is the first one that will be going in my 200x200mm layout, need to reference some faces to use onit.

On this page i will be using the hands shacking at the top of the page in the 290x105mm, if i can adapt it successfully i will be hopefully wrapping a time line around the whole arms and hands,  but watch this space i still need to develop the idea.

This is my favorite idea i had as its a little different to the others and i will be combining both images to produce my 105x200mm layout.

Photoshop Week 2

We started out with the same image as we had used last week. First i unlocked the background to make it a layer so i could change and play with the colour of it, you can tell this with the small checkered background.
Using the lasso tool i selected different areas then added colour to theses areas using the fill bucket. Also changing the layer to multiply brings the black back through and makes it "pop".
Using the brush tool i filled in the foreground image and using the gradient fill to give a nice affect.
Then i used the lasso tool to select the different areas of the image so i could colour the selected areas and make my image look good with different colour fills.

Typology Poster Studio Brief 2

So after exploring a range of different themes 10 in all i have decided to do my A1 poster on 26 way to use a pan. As pans are normally only used to cook with i feel that this poster could be a challenge to think of  25 other uses for a pan, but also change how the world sees the humble pan.
So after many hours coming up with ideas of what my 26 illustrations are going to be i set about drawing them up on my A1 paper, but i ran into a problem a few drawings in. In the excitement of getting started i laid my paper down in landscape and did not notice until i had already started working on it. So after turning my new paper to porate i just got some tracing paper and traced my images. I really liked that by tracing my images once i had drawn them out helped clean them up, so i did this process for all 26 and in the end the only regret i had with doing this was the time it took to do it but very happy with the final results. I used fine liners to get my line work down and add abit of tone to my pans then added small amounts on watered down drawing ink to try breack the poster up as there was far too much white. After adding some ink i then felt i should just leave the poster alone as i felt i could of ruined it by adding too much ink.

Photoshop week 1

We took our ink drawings from last week and put them on Adobe Photoshop. We first scanned the image in using the scanner and the scanners software.
then once we had our settings and image correctly cropped we saved it to userwork drive ready to be opened up in Photoshop.
In photoshop we learnt how to edit the image, using the crop tool to rotate and resize.
Then using the levels (cmd+l) we alter and corrected the light and dark tones of the image, this also helped to take out any blemishes caused by dirt and dust, cleaned up the image.
if they was still any areas that needed cleaning up, taking off any mucky marks or needed any missed placed lines taking off we used the spot healing brush tool to take theses out. When using that tool only make it slightly bigger then the area your using it on otherwise it could be noticeable.
At this stage i was happy at how my digital image was looking.

Typology Studio Brief 1

We have been asked to come up with 10 themes containing 26 images one for each letter of the alphabet, theses themes and images should reflect me. The first and hardest part is coming up with 10 themes that are interesting.  To get the creative juices flowing i put pencil to sketch book and started drawing a number of very quick sketches to do with motor racing, these been formula 1, moto GP and BSB (british super bikes) as these are my 3 favourite sports to watch and i feel i know a little bit about them to come up with drawings to represent them.

Self Evaluation

How effectively do you think you have tackled the first part of this brief? Have you been able to exhaust your ideas? How well have you used research to support the development of your ideas? Has drawing allowed you to visualise your ideas and evolve them further?

I found in the themes I had chosen to do, the ones i found more interesting i could come up with more ideas and visualise them a lot better then the ones that where less appealing and dull. Whilst get these ideas down i used a lot of secondary research with images i found on search engines to give me a quick visual to work from and correctly identify what i needed.

In light of your feedback, what theme/ ideas do you intend to develop into a final deliverable poster? Please  describe your intentions for the tone of voice/ functionality of its artwork.

The theme i have decided to go with is 26 way to use a pan. Doing the group crit and hearing what my peers had to say really helped me decide this, and also help me with ways i can develop this ideas into practise. It will depicted 26 ways to use a pan other then the ways you think you can use a pan, with a comedy edge.

Outline briefly how you intend to generate the final deliverable artwork. Consider media, method, design and application. What are the next steps required in development and refinement of your poster.

To document the ideas by taking photos of the actions with a pan to help me better illustrate them. Decide on what scale and size each illustration is going to be and where on the poster positions will best suit each image.

Observation and reverence with ink

i reverenced these images from a book on the Vietnam conflict.
The image was very clear and easy to copy from but to try and define detail and lines in dark fabric is hard to see from just a photo this is where if it was drawn from primary observation i feel you would be able to see the fabric move and bend so you would get a better understanding of the subject which could be reflected in my drawing.

These two where drawn from observing the vices that where directly placed in front of me. With all the components interwinding and the complex pieces of the vice it was very hard but enjoyable to tackle.

These  three are drawn from observing a cup and ball toy. Although the scale seems to be a issue for me with this set of images i feel because i was directly in front of the subject i could really study them, trying to add the texture and feel of the materials to add doe kind of depth and feel to the images.

Royal Armoires Discovery Center

We went down to the Royal Armoires and the Discovery Centre to do some more work on our observational drawing. Today I struggled a lot more getting into the zone to do the drawings and seemed to be alot more aware of other people around me. This seemed to have a massive impacted on what i got done as it made me over think and get frustrated every time i put pen to paper which is a shame due to the subjects that where on offer to draw. Next time i go out in public to draw i need to block out what people are doing around me and try just focus on what I'm doing and enjoy myself.

Observation drawing in Leeds

A couple of days last week we went out on to location to do some primary research . We first went to the leeds university, then leeds city art gallery where we observed the surroundings and set about completing the task we had been set, which was to draw things from above, unnecessary, walking, architectural, organic, unnoticed, held in hand, that makes you smile, smelt or heard, old. I found this hard as i have not really done this before and i find observational drawing a challenge to get going with, but once i started this task i really did doing this. Altho i do think i need to continue this practise so i can improve and hopefully enjoy doing it more.
