Responsive Illustration Friday Part 2

HAd to start a new blog post as me and Blogger have fallen out on the other post as this website is useless and annoying but thats a rant for another day.

Friday 18th December

SOAR

1hour 30mins (ish)

So this weeks word is SOAR not sore or saw but soar like a bird. So thats what i have done but i have used a Saw as the body of the bird and just added wings. This is a little jab at the english language and its stupid rules to have different spellings for the same sounded word baffles me and is one of thousands of reasons i struggle like holy hell with reading and writing.

Friday 8th January

TROPICAL

This weeks word is Tropical so the first things that came to mind was Pineapple, Toucan, Sun, Beach, and Cocktail., So my original plan was to draw a toucan on a beach drinking a cocktail from a pineapple but then i realised that  would take ages to do. So i thought out of the list i like toucans the most. So a toucan was the answer to this weeks word a tropical bird. As i was drawing some toucan ideas i realised i could not get the feet to look right, first i tried to hide them behind a pineapple but i dint like that i dea so on my final idea i just stood the bird in a paddling pool as i feel that best represents a tropical british summer.
I also tried to do more of my final design using hand draw methods as i feel that when i play around with my designs in photoshop they loose something, so on this one iv drawn the outline in pen and coloured it using promarkers, then only tweaked the brightness and contrast to get the colors bolder and brighter.

Friday 22nd January

ORBIT
So this weeks word is orbit and with this one im giving myself 2 hours in which to complete the illustration. I knew from the moment i saw the word I would like to draw a tribute to Tim Peaks the british astronaut, who is currently up on the international space station at the moment and he completed the first ever british space walk. So i knew i was going to illustrate a spaceman with a union flag on his arm looking at the world as he orbits the planet.

Drew the outline with my fine liner before scanning in to photoshop to add colour.

Responsive Illustration Friday part 1

FRIDAY 30th NOVEMBER

Illustraion Friday

I did a illustration for Illustration Fridays page, this weeks word was punch. I tried to do this in 1 hour so i drew out what i wanted to represent a punch so i did someone getting a punch in the face. First i drew it on to paper using a fine liner, scanned it in and opened it in photoshop.
I first changed the levels making the blacks black and the white whiter, then using the fill tool and bush i coloured it in. I tried not to use very bright colours and by playing around with the transparence and fill i could get the desired tone i was looking for. Then i uploaded it to www.illustrationfriday.com.

FRIDAY 4th DECEMBER

WET

So this weeks word is wet. So i again gave myself just one hour to produces this week's task altho i think i may have gone over a little as i broke off to have some breakfast and coffee. The first thing that came to mind when thinking of wet was our beautiful british weather as we seem to have had lots of wet rain over the last few weeks.  SO i decided to draw a bird flying in the rain as that's what i see a lot birds with nowhere to go to get out of the rain.

IN my sketchbook i drew this bird in the rain using a fine liner and scanned it into my computer so i could edit it and add colour using photoshop.

FRIDAY 11th December

 UNICORN

So this weeks word is Unicorn and I have decided to spend a bit longer on my design for this one. I knew straight away I wanted to do something different instead of a standard looking unicorn. So as I was typing unicorn in to google to have a quick look at what others do to best show a unicorn's appearance, when in th edrop down box i saw unicycle so I knew then it had to be a corn on the cob mixed with a unicycle, or a corn graduating from university.
So I set about drawing a unicorn bike, it did not take me too long to do the design it was penning all the corns kernals in that took the time. Then when I rubbed my pencil guild out the new rubber I used took away loads of the pen too so I had to repen the whole thing.
I just used photoshop to color the image with 3 layers one for the outline one for colour and one for the background and fairy/unicorn dust.

After completing this and thinking i'm the most unique person in the world i went on to illustration friday's website and guess what someone else had the same idea as me boooooooooo, and they have finished theys off really well it looks very professional. I have tried to up my game a little myself by using the opacity of the brush to try give the unicorn magic dust some depth and

Here I have done another illustration to try do something different for Unicorn, I have done a corn on the cob graduating from university, but i'm not sure where the rest on the world call university uni or not. if they don't then this could be a issue when trying to understand what i have done here.  Again i have drawn it out first using pencil and fineliner, scanned it into the computer and edited it in Photoshop, using layers to build up the image.
I feel I'm still annoyed I didn't submit the other design quicker and be the first, so that negative attitude has carried over to this design and i feel it shows as i don't like this very much at all. It feels half arsed and thrown together the compassion is rubbish and the drawing its self could be done to a much higher standard to give a better start.

Author Studio Brief 1

I'm going to to at the works of Canadian author and activist  Naomi Klein. I chose this author as i'm very interested in the work she has done and the books written about state of the world with big companies and the elite rich. I feel it could be a challenge to Illustrate her message in to images but as its something i too have very strong personal views on i want to give it ago.

Her are a some quick first ideas to try illustrate some of the things i think represent her work. I have just tried to start off with basic and quite obvious images using company logos i know Naomi has had dealings with in her work. Using big corporation logos try work out how they can some how represent their dominance over the world.
This is a few quick ideas that i played around with, they represent the Shell Arctic Drilling which i have been following over the last few months. as it it turns out that Naomi is too a activist against the drilling too, i have been following this protest through the group Greenpeace and have signed the petition to have it stopped.

Ideas for how to show global brands and they world domination.

Branded for life, tried to have graves of people who are loyal customers to global mega brands and they even have them on they graves to continue they support even after death.

I have done research of what Naomi's books are about by watching interviews and talks she has given about her books and believes. This is a great way to get to understand what her message is with out me struggling through a book to only barely understand what is going on.  As i struggle with read quite a bit this seems to be a good option,
I have also watched the film The Take which is all about the global financial crisis and how big companies are taken on by the workers even after the fat cats have given up on they profit making ways.

Climate Change

In her latest book This Changes Everything Naomi talks about how in order to take action to to tackle climate change there are only  radical ways left in which we need to change how our planet is run, to sort out the extreme problems we are facing now and whats too come. She talks about its not just what we do to our planet in terms of the harm we are doing but also the fact that the  way in which is run by governments and the elite has to change as all this destruction is been caused due to the profits that are to be made.

From what i have listened to so far one of the main points that has stuck  is the temperature changes our world is going to face and its this that will have such a massive and destructive impact on our fragile little planet. Even tho it does not sound like a massive change it will have a global impact and every person, animal, fish, insect and plant will be impacted massively if not even wiped out from it. These numbers and 4 and 6 degrees in temperature.
Also the big dad evil corporations and governments that are destroying the earth just to line their own pockets.

  • Ideas around climate change and Greedy people
  • Try and develop the face more
  • Feel like the one with the monster wave and city has been done many times before.

  • Try refine the world on gas mark 4 further
  •  Look at different types of ovens domestic and industrial.
  • Develop earth in oven in different formats, could also work for my animation
How the sustainable industry is treated by the fossil fuel giants.

6 degrees C make it abit more evil looking death metal style

  • Oil well spilling out with skull shape in it
  • Going to develop this idea further, background inferno sky
  • Try lino cut see what the effect is like.

These volcanos where a attempt at some realistic images, i wanted t put some kind of evil image in the smoke that could represent the global companies

Glodel energy compnys messing with education for they own benifit

I decided that i wanted to print all my images in this style and developed in the method i had used to create this image, which is charcoal and edited in Photoshop. But after missing out on printing these before the christmas break due to illness I have sat back and decided that with the time i have left to print these it may be to much of a challenge to get right. These concerns are from feedback i got at the crit before christmas, a few people including tutors said i had set myself a challenge with the amount of black on my images and this could be a real issue when screen printing them and getting the black to be full and thick of colour and not a streaky distorted mess.  So as a back up and to have more options i'm going to do the same (ish) designs in my old faithful fine liner.
Skull and oil rig on decaying earth Charcoal. i used charcoal to try get the gradient i was trying to achieve . once i sacnned it inn to the computer and played with th levels and brightness i could turn the black pure black and make it seem like the death earth is all erie sat alone in space.
Going to try add west  minster to the top of this skull to represent politics the Klein talks about in there change to attitudes in global warming.

So iv come to preparing for print and iv decided im going to try and do mine hand drawn using tracing paper and a black china marker. To do this i have to make a positive for each colour, so to start with i marked out the layer which is going to have the color and then on a different piece i laid it over the top of my one already done and marked out the black and tryed to see if i could work in the gradient i wanted.

Printing

So i finally got to the print room to expose my screens and see how well the china marker and tracing paper was going to work in my final prints. Producing the screens was not a problem and when expoossing my screens on the exposing unit i was surprised to learn I only had to expose them for 11 seconds that's all it took. The effect that i was left with was good as when the screen had finally dried and i did a few test prints it looked like I had coloured them with a crayon which i liked. I ran into some problems with one of my prints and that  i could not get them to line up properly when trying to print the different colours, I think this was down to my tracing paper positives not been drawn correctly and must of been off line when i did them, I feel as well i did not put any registration marks on my different screens and this made it that all more difficult to line up the colours, but i loved the experience of doing multiple colours and i know what i need to do next time to get them to have a better finish .

So after printing these my final prints i was not sure on how they had turned out as i was so happy with the versions i had done originally that i was going to digitally print and have all loverly colours textures and tones, i couldn't help but only have criticism for these my final outcome.  But after speaking and showing these to others i feel a lot happier about them as they do have some really nice qualities such as the textures thats using china marker on tracing paper gives, the way they look like they have been coloured in with crayon rather than screen printed. Next time i have a project with this kind of deadline i need to try and use the time wisely and not just put things off until the last minute, as i feel if i had done a test run weeks or even months earlier i could of got this set of prints to look alot better and work better in a series.

After effect workshop

ouil504 about the author

adobe after effect introduction

how to use after effect

1. finder - applications- adobe cc- aftereffect

2. unstick welcome starter box. never shows up again.

what and how Panels work.

highlighted panels are the active panels

-project panel.

list of the things and assets you will use to create your animation.

-time line panel.

the time line is decided into 2 parts.left side (like photoshop layers) right side is the time ruler this is were you range the assets ( were you decide whats going to happen and when)

-composition panel

were you see the results what you have created

3. click pages to highlight - composition - new composition - presets - pal widescreen square pixel - pixel aspect ratio - square pixels - frame rate - 175:96 (1.82)

4.change time duration to the leghnth of your short film will be.

5. change background colour

in after effect when things are highlighted in blue you can change them. click and change manually or over mouse over the highlighted area and click and drag.

to change any of the settings during go to the composition settings

creating layers.

highlight the time line panel so its highlighted blue - layers - new - solid - adjust size - ok

time line panel, the red bar represents the solid we've just created.

editing the solids time span, move mouse over to the edge of the red bar and click and drag to adjust the length of the solid.

you can move the solid by clicking the centre of the red solid in the centre and drag it to were you want it to appears on your time line.

adding another layer as explained before.

if you need to make another copy of a layer you can go to edit copy and duplicate the layer/solid

how to play back your composition. to the right is a preview panel works just like a dvd player :\

the play button will play your composition slower than the actual speed. to play back in real time use the ram preview bottom on the end of the play back list on the play back panel. the one highlighted in black on the image below. so using the ram prevue gives you a accrete play back.

if the video is too complex it might not play it back for you. change the resolution of display in composition window whilst working. you can change it the resolution to half so its only every other pixel that is shown, the image will be less quality but this allows after effect to be able to play back your complex composition. a temporary change on your play back it ail not effect the final result of your short film.

deleting solids. click and highlight the layer and press delete

layer properties.

accessing the layer properties in the time line panel to the right.

by the side of the layer you will see a triangle click the triangle and  it will drop text. double press transform and the properties of the layer will drop down. here you can edit the information at your own will. remember text that is highlighted blue indicates that you can edit them. e.g.. rotate, scale position and so on.

how to animate in key frames.

key change a significant change with in the composition

move the blue arrow on the time line panel were you want the animation to start

line the time line panel into the layer properties click the stop watch. by doing this it has fixed the poison of the layer there, move the time ruler along to were you want the animation to stop. click the blue diamond to lock the animation. drag your solid to were you want the position to end. like below

move the time ruler with in the centre of the animation time line. drag the line on your solid to a position you want it and the animation will move along the track you've edited.

when ever you make a new point with in the time line of the animation make sure you press the diamond and make it blue to lock the animation in. the left side of the image below. also the arrows by side of them let you toggle from lock positions through out your animation.

exporting

got to the composition- add or render queue. this will create another tab to the left hand side of the timeline panel. render setting - best settings - time span to drop menu - export choose press ok. then on the left hand side again click lossless - press format options - click animation menu and press H264

again at the left hand side of the time line press the output as seen below

and then press save.
